Hannah Akio is a multi-media artist specializing in bonsai, and it’s related artforms.
She has been acknowledged for her kusamono, winning “Finest BonsaiTree and Companion Planting” in the 2025 U.S. National Bonsai Exhibition with her planting created to accent Cyrul Grum’s hinoki cypress, Chamaecyparisobtusa. Her large and innovative kusamono displays are an annual draw at the Ann Arbor Bonsai Society Show, where she integrates academic art principles with traditional concepts for kusamono creation. She has also shown her works in fine art exhibitions beyond the scope of the bonsai world.
Hannah is part of an international family that shares its heritage with Japan. Her time living in Tokyo was often spent seeking out natural beauty with her small children amidst the paved urbanity. She has a bachelor’s degree in literature and creative writing. She is also not the first retired dancer to find her experience with composition, line, energy, and movement applicable to bonsaiarts. She studied field biology as an elective while getting her degree in a medical field. Additionally, she studied permaculture with Master Gardener, Zeal Chen.
As Musashi, Miyamoto wrote “In all things, have no preferences.” Hannah very much has learned to hone the skills but not to close the mind or heart to method or concept.
She invites inquiries for commissions, barters, presentations, collaborations, unique carved vessels for plants and any other ideas that might sow seeds for our collective future.
